Dental Anxiety in Fallbrook & Bonsall | Nitrous Oxide & Oral Sedation Options
If you've been putting off a dental visit because the thought of sitting in that chair makes your heart race — you're not alone, and there's nothing wrong with you.
Dental anxiety is one of the most common conditions we encounter in our Bonsall practice. Research consistently shows that roughly one in three adults experiences significant dental anxiety, and for many, that anxiety is enough to keep them away from the dentist for years at a time. In our experience serving patients across Fallbrook and North San Diego County, the patients who need care the most are often the ones who've been putting it off the longest — precisely because no one has taken the time to address their fear directly.
This post is for every patient in Fallbrook and Bonsall who has ever cancelled a dental appointment, sat in the parking lot unable to go in, or simply stopped making appointments altogether. Drs. Stanton and Roberts want you to know: we see you, we understand, and we have real options that make dental care genuinely manageable — even for patients who've been dreading it for years.
Why Dental Anxiety Is So Common — And So Rarely Addressed
Dental anxiety exists on a wide spectrum. For some patients, it's a low-level unease that makes appointments unpleasant but manageable. For others, it rises to the level of genuine dental phobia — a fear so intense that avoidance feels like the only option, even when they know a problem is getting worse.
The roots of dental anxiety are varied. Many patients trace their fear to a painful or frightening experience earlier in life — often in childhood, often with a provider who didn't take the time to explain what was happening or check in along the way. Others are anxious about loss of control, about pain, about the sounds and sensations of dental instruments, or about being judged for the state of their teeth after years of avoidance.
Whatever the source, dental anxiety is real, it's valid, and it deserves to be taken seriously — not dismissed with a reassuring "it'll be fine" before the drill starts.
At our Bonsall office, addressing anxiety isn't a side note to treatment — it's part of how we practice.
What We Do Differently for Anxious Patients
We Start by Listening
Before anything clinical happens, we want to understand your experience. What specifically makes you anxious? Is it needles? Sounds? The feeling of not being in control? A past experience that went badly? The more we understand about what drives your anxiety, the better we can tailor your visit to work around it rather than through it.
This isn't a box we check before moving on. It's a genuine conversation — and it shapes everything that follows, from how we explain each step of a procedure, to the pace we move at, to which sedation option makes the most sense for you.
We Explain Everything Before We Do It
For anxious patients, the unknown is often the hardest part. A sound you didn't expect, a sensation you weren't warned about, a step that wasn't explained — these are the moments that transform manageable discomfort into genuine distress. Our team narrates each step before it happens, checks in throughout the procedure, and never moves forward until you're ready.
You Are Always in Control
Establishing a clear signal that means "stop" — a raised hand, a simple word — gives anxious patients something they often feel they've lost: agency. At our Bonsall practice, that signal is always available and always respected. Knowing you can pause at any moment changes the experience of having no choice into having complete choice. That shift in perception makes an enormous difference for most anxious patients.
We Never Rush
Anxious patients often sense when they're moving through a tight schedule — and that awareness compounds the anxiety. We build extra time into appointments for patients who need it, so there's never a feeling of being hurried through something that already feels overwhelming. Going slowly is not an inconvenience; it's part of the care.
Sedation Options Available at Our Bonsall Office
For patients whose anxiety goes beyond what comfort measures alone can address, we offer two effective sedation options that make treatment genuinely possible — even for procedures or patients that would otherwise require multiple failed attempts to complete.
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
Nitrous oxide is the most widely used sedation option in dentistry, and for good reason: it works quickly, wears off quickly, and has an outstanding safety record spanning over a century of clinical use.
Nitrous oxide is delivered through a small, comfortable mask placed over the nose. Within a few minutes, most patients notice a pleasant, relaxed warmth — a sense of calm that takes the edge off anxiety without putting you to sleep or making you feel out of control. You remain fully conscious, able to hear and respond to everything happening around you. When the mask is removed at the end of the appointment, the effects dissipate within minutes. Most patients can drive themselves home.
Nitrous oxide is appropriate for a wide range of procedures — including routine cleanings — and is an excellent option for patients with mild to moderate anxiety who want to take the edge off without a more involved sedation protocol.
Oral Sedation
For patients with more significant anxiety, or for longer or more complex procedures, we offer oral sedation — a prescribed medication taken by mouth before your appointment that produces a deeper, more sustained state of relaxation.
Oral sedation typically involves a benzodiazepine medication, taken about an hour before your scheduled appointment time. By the time you arrive, the medication has taken effect and you feel genuinely calm — drowsy, at ease, and far less aware of the procedure as it unfolds. You remain conscious and able to communicate throughout, but most patients have little to no memory of the appointment afterward. Many describe it as the first dental visit they've had in years that didn't leave them shaken.
Because oral sedation takes several hours to wear off fully, you'll need a trusted person to drive you to and from the appointment. We'll discuss all of this with you in advance so there are no surprises on the day of your visit.
Oral and nitrous oxide sedation can also be combined for patients who need maximum comfort during a lengthy procedure — we'll recommend the approach that makes the most sense for your specific situation and health history.

A Note to Patients Who've Been Avoiding Care for Years
We want to say something directly to patients who haven't been to the dentist in a long time — whether it's been two years or twenty.
We don't judge. Not even a little.
We see patients regularly who haven't had dental care in years because anxiety made it impossible. When they finally come in, the first thing many of them say — before they've even sat down — is an apology for the state of their teeth. We don't need that apology. What brought you here took courage, and our only goal from this point forward is to help you get to a healthy place as gently and efficiently as possible.
The state of your teeth when you walk in the door is our starting point, not our judgment. We've seen it all, and we've helped patients come back from every point on that spectrum. What matters is that you're here.
Dental Anxiety FAQ: Questions We Hear from Fallbrook & Bonsall Patients
Is nitrous oxide safe?
Yes — nitrous oxide has been used safely in dentistry for well over a century and has an excellent safety profile. It is administered at carefully controlled concentrations, takes effect within minutes, and clears from your system within minutes of the mask being removed. Unlike oral sedation, nitrous requires no recovery period — the vast majority of patients are able to drive themselves home after their appointment. It is safe for most adults and older children, though we'll review your health history before recommending it.
Can I be sedated for just a cleaning?
Absolutely. Sedation is not reserved for extractions or root canals — if anxiety makes any dental appointment difficult, including a routine cleaning or exam, we can use nitrous oxide or oral sedation to help you through it comfortably. For many of our most anxious patients, sedation for a cleaning is exactly what breaks the cycle of avoidance and gets them back into a regular care routine. We'd rather use sedation for a cleaning than have you skip it altogether for another year.
What if I'm too anxious to even make the phone call?
We hear this more often than you might expect, and we mean it when we say: reach out any way that works for you. If calling feels like too much right now, you can request an appointment online at bonsalldentist.com and note in the comments that dental anxiety is a concern. We'll call you, take our time, and have the whole conversation at your pace — before you ever have to set foot in the office.
How do I bring up my anxiety with my dentist?
Just say it out loud — before your appointment, at check-in, or the moment you sit down. "I get really anxious at the dentist" is a sentence our team hears regularly and takes seriously every time. You can also mention it when you book your appointment so we can schedule additional time and have sedation options ready before you arrive. There is no wrong way to tell us, and no version of that conversation that will make us anything other than glad you said something.
